Having said this, there are a lot worse guitars out there, and as well as being historically important, the 1820 bass can certainly provide the goods when required. Over the course of the 70s, the Japanese output improved dramatically, and in many ways these early 70s models are a low point for the brand. These new Epiphones were based on existing Matsumoku guitars, sharing body shapes, and hardware, but the Epiphone line was somewhat upgraded, with inlaid logos and a 2x2 peghead configuration. The Matsumoku factory had been producing guitars for export for some time, but the 1820 bass (alongside a number of guitar models and the 5120 electric acoustic bass) were the first Epiphone models to be made there. I can’t even use them knowing how much easier and quicker and better I am with this thing.By the end of the 1960s, a decision had been made to move Epiphone guitar production from the USA (at the Kalamazoo plant where Gibson guitars were made), to Matsumoto in Japan, creating a line of guitars and basses significantly less expensive than the USA-built models (actually less than half the price). My Gretsch Chet Atkins, Les Paul, tele, and strat are just wall pieces now. I stopped sleeping with my wife and now sleep with my Peerless guitars. I kid you not, I am not sure how every real guitarist doesn’t have one of these things. You know how your les Paul bends a little bit easier then your strat…well, this bends easier then your les Paul. It’s really strange, like someone greased the frets when you’re ready to bend. The bends can go as far as your fingers desire with ease.
They are literally like an unGodly perfect. The frets are in between like a jumbo and a medium, and I hate jumbo, but they aren’t. The tone keeps going and going till you kill it. The action is like no other guitar you will touch.
I bought the other one too, but I didn’t even have the money for them, so I gave him all the money I had to put them on layaway for me. I told the guy it was the best guitar I’ve ever put my hands on. I literally put my hand around the neck, probably held a C chord, strummed it twice maybe, and brought it up to the counter and asked if they had anymore. Went in cause I was stressed out that day (about money nonetheless). I have searched various websites for a replacement but without success, I have tried aftermarket 335 styles, but they do not fit, I can get a custom one made at an extortionate price from images on the web, I notice on Google Images, this model is shown at various stages with both a pointy effect guard as well as a more regular curved 335 style, my enquiries to the owners claim both styles are original, would you be able to supply me with a new pickgurd at all, and if so what price with postge to United Kingdom, Very kind regards, Peter However, somewhere along its journey, the pickguard has been lost. It has been locked away by original owner in its case almost since purchase as he bought it on impulse, it is immaculate. It is absolutely stunning and plays superbly.
